Andres receiving his award from Professor Walker and crowd

The 15th Annual SMP Postgraduate Poster Day competition was held in the Alumni Court on Friday 16th September.  Thirty-two posters were presented at the event, with over 150 guests from UQ's research community in attendance, including the Vice-Chancellor, as well as a number of visiting prospective PhD students from around Australia and New Zealand.

Professor Stephen Walker, Executive Dean, Faculty of Science presented our winners with their awards:

  • Liam Hodgkinson (PhD candidate. Principal Advisor Prof Phil Pollett; Associate Advisor Dr Ross McVinish) Best Mathematics/Statistics poster - Approximations for Large-Scale Occupancy Processes
  • Andrés Rosario Hamann (PhD candidate. Principal Advisor Dr Arkady Fedorov; Associate Advisor Dr Clemens Muller) Best Physics poster - A photonic quantum diode using superconducting qubits
  • Natasha Taylor (PhD candidate. Principal Advisor Dr Ivan Kassal; Associate Advisor Prof Ben Powell) Best poster from those who have presented at Poster Day (both disciplines) in previous years - Transfer of Delocalised Charges in Molecular Systems.

Congratulations to Liam, Andrés, and Natasha!

This follows the exceptional success of SMP's RHD students in winning four of the Graduate School's 2015 Dean's Award for Outstanding Research Higher Degree Theses, the recipients being:

Ardalan Armin - Electro-Optics of Organic Solar Cells and Photodiodes (Principal Advisor Prof Paul Meredith);

Gilbert Macbeth - Improving the utility of genetic markers in fish populations (Principal Advisor Prof You-gan Wang)

Hien Nguyen - Finite Mixture Models for Regression Problems (Principal Advisor Prof Geoff McLachlan)

Robert Lewis-Swan - Ultracold atoms for foundational tests of quantum mechanics (Principal Advisor Assoc Prof Karen Kheruntsyan).  Robert's thesis was also chosen for inclusion in the series "Springer Theses":    This is a very selective series, and is a further indication of the high quality of Robert's thesis.
