Postgraduate Poster Day
Each year, the School of Mathematics and Physics holds a Postgraduate Poster Day at which all postgraduate research candidates in the School are given the opportunity of presenting a poster to showcase their work.
Presentation of a poster is compulsory for those in their second year of candidature (or for those beyond second year who have not presented at Poster Day before). All other research candidates are encouraged to participate. There is a prize of $500 in conference travel funding for the best 2nd year poster in each discipline, as well as a separate prize for the best poster in each discipline from those who have presented a poster at Poster Day before.
In 2009 Poster Day will be held on Friday 28th August from 12 noon to 2.00 pm in the Alumni Court (opposite Priestley Building and adjacent to the Physics Annexe). Viewing of the Posters will take place 12-1, and prizes will be awarded at 1 pm, after which there will be a BBQ lunch.
For very instructive tips on making and presenting your poster, you may wish to view the slides kindly made available to us by Professor Hugh Possingham after his talk to SMP postgraduates.
To register for Poster Day 2009 please contact the School Postgraduate Admin Officer Murray Kane m.kane@smp.uq.edu.au by Monday, 17th August 2009.
Information on printing posters:
Recommended size for posters is A0 (1189 x 841mm) or A1 (841 mm x 594 mm). The inks used by GPA are UV-proof and are fade-proof outdoors for 2 years, indoors for 5 years. It is not necessary to laminate your poster, but should you wish to, the School will cover the cost. You will be provided on the day with Velcro hooks to display your poster on the fabric-covered display screens.
Your poster will be printed free of charge at the School of Geography, Planning and Architecture (Chamberlain Building #51). Follow the steps below to organise the printing of your poster.
- Please pick up a Request for Inter-departmental Services Form (RIDS form) from the Reception of the SMP Office in the Physics Annexe (Building 6). This form will have been prepared and signed for you by a financial delegate of SMP.
- Take this form, together with your poster file, to the GPA office.
Please visit the GPA website for details on how to organize this - http://www.gpa.uq.edu.au/school/services.htm (note the pages within this site can only be accessed by computers with a UQ IP address. If you are not in a position to access the GPA site from on campus, you can request the relevant information in email from them).
Please read carefully the information provide by GPA about the formats that they support, about the mandatory use of the UQ logo on your poster, and about how to submit your poster to them.
GPA also offer tips and advice about producing a good poster. It would be a very good idea to get your poster printed at least a week before the event as GPA cannot offer a guarantee that they will be able to print on demand. This will also give you time to address any changes that may need to be made as a result of formatting problems.
Please contact Murray Kane if you have any queries about the production of the posters or any other aspect of Postgraduate Poster Day.
