Over the last 3 years we have been developing a theory to understand the details of absorption spectroscopy in a vapour of moving atoms, where quantum mechanics gives rise to small but significant quantitative effects.  We are about to start an experimental project at the University of Adelaide to build the world’s best thermometer using Optical Frequency Combs (the subject of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics), which will require the further development of this theory.  The dream is that, in close collaboration with experimental efforts, the student will develop theory and software to help experimentalists build and understand the detailed quantum correction arising in the light-matter interaction.  This project will be done in collaboration with Prof Andre Luiten at the University of Adelaide
