The latest group of SMP’s top tutors were recognised and awarded last week for their outstanding performance in tutoring Mathematics and Physics undergraduate courses.

The tutors received a certificate of achievement and a movie voucher, while those who attended also enjoyed a lunch hosted by SMP Head of School Professor Halina Rubinsztein-Dunlop at UQ St Lucia’s Alumni Court on 31st October 2012.

The 16 winners, recognised for their efforts in tutoring during the second semester of 2011 to the first semester of this year, were selected based on results from student feedback through surveys, as well as nominations from course coordinators, laboratory supervisors and tutorial coordinators for both the Mathematics and Physics disciplines.

Tutors contribute to an important dimension to the learning experiences of students, said Dr Margaret Wegener, Chair of SMP’s Teaching and Learning Committee.

“They are important as they have one-on-one interactions with students, in small group situations – in contrast to the often very large classes of lectures,” Dr Wegener said.

“Moreover, they work in various settings – tutorials, labs, drop-in help centres.”
